Festivals - A Potted History

The modern music festival as we know it today was born in the US in 1967 when the Monterey International Pop Music Festival was launched. Featuring artists like Jimi Hendrix and The Who, the three-day concert was arguably the inspiration for iconic events like Glastonbury and Woodstock, which appeared a couple of years later. However, the history of the festival dates back even further to the early religious rites and the word festival was first recorded in 1589. In Britain the modern music festivals - live concerts, muddy fields and overnight camping - have their predecessors in the Beaulieu jazz concerts from 1956. These later evolved into Hyde Park free events, where the hippie spirit of the age was warmly embraced. Already exceedingly popular in the UK, the number of music festivals boomed in the 21st century and in 2010 Britain hosted over 450 festivals catering to all different tastes, from mainstream offerings like Reading and Leeds and V to more boutique offerings like Green Man and Lounge on the Farm. Today, festivals are part of the fabric of cultural Britain, with one in every ten adults have attended a festival in the last year.
