This avant-garde metal music project is the brainchild of Manuel Gagneux, who blends the sound of negro spirituals with black metal. It's an innovative sound with Gagneaux on vocals and guitar and a host of backing vocalists and musicians who come together to create something completely different. The project's initial two albums, Devil Is Fine and Stranger Fruit, were both released to critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone describing Devil Is Fine as "one of the Best Metal Records of 2016". The brainchild of Manuel Gagneaux

Swiss-American Manuel Gagneaux was born in Basel to an African American mother and Swiss father. He started playing music from a young age, learning the piano first and getting into a variety of music styles during his youth, including different types of death metal. He had his first taste of being in a band as a teenager, when he was in a black metal band called Hellelujah. In 2012, he moved to New York City, where he formed the chamber pop project, Birdmask, in 2013. Zeal & Ardor was a project that began in New York City but moved to Basel, Switzerland and came into fruition off the back of him posting his Birdmask music to 4chan and asking for honest feedback. One user suggested he combine the sounds of black metal and negro music, which proved the inspiration for it.
