Toro Y Moi Biography - Indie-Rocker to Dance Doyen

This South Carolina native started his fledging career with indie group The Heist and the Accomplice in 2004, earning a reputation on the underground gig circuit. He opted to strike out on his own three years later, experimenting with electronic sounds while completing a degree in graphic design. By 2009, releases such as his Blessa EP were heralded as spearheading the chillwave movement, a genre known for splicing looped synths with filtered vocals and woozy production.

The following year his debut album Causers of This was praised by the likes of NME, who described it as a "blissed out masterpiece". 2011 follow-up Underneath the Pine was similarly heralded, earning a place on respected music site Pitchfork's Best 50 Albums of the Year. A serial remixer for artists such as Tyler, The Creator and Cut Copy, he's now one of the most respected producers in modern dance.
