Tindersticks Biography - Emotionally-Resonant Rock

Vocalist Staples, keyboardist David Boulter and multi-talented musician Dickon Hinchliffe formed the band after performing together in Nottingham band Ashphalt Ribbons in the late '80s. They joined forces with three other musicians and this British alternative act was born in the summer of 1992. They started recording demo tapes and formed their own label, Tippy Toe Records, that same year so they could release their first single 'Patchwork', followed by 'Marbles' and 'A Marriage Made In Heaven'. Underground success came quickly - their untitled debut LP was named Album of the Year by music magazine Melody Maker and their second untitled album soared into the UK top 20 off the back of tracks like 'Sleepy Song'. This 1995 record cemented their signature sound, attracting hordes of fans and scoring them a support slot with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The band changed musical direction slightly over the following years, choosing to adopt a lighter, more soulful sound for their fourth album Simple Pleasure, characterised by the fragile female backing vocals of tracks like 'Looking for a Way Out'.
