Solo project turns into supergroup

The Voidz came together in 2013 when Julian Casablancas, best known for fronting celebrated New York rockers The Strokes, began to assemble a backing band for his second studio effort. Keyboardist Jeff Kite and drummer Alex Carapetis, who later enjoyed a two-year stint with Australian rockers Wolfmother, had already performed with the singer during the tour for his 2009 solo debut, "Phrazes for the Young." Bassist Jake Bercovici had also collaborated with him on a track specially recorded for French fashion label Azzaro. After adding mutual guitarist friends Jeramy Gritter and Amir Yaghmai to the line-up, the singer decided to credit 2014's "Tyranny" to Julian Casablancas+The Voidz. Released through his own Cult label, the record was hailed as one of NME's Top 50 albums of the year and was supported by high-profile festival sets at SXSW, Lollapalooza and Coachella.
