The Roots have played all over the world. During their two-decade history, the band has made numerous appearances at major music festivals like San Francisco's Outside Lands, California's Coachella, the U.K.'s Glastonbury, Tennessee's Bonnaroo, Austin's SXSW, Jazz Fest in New Orleans, Denmark's Roskilde Fest and more. In addition, every June the band hosts The Roots Picnic in their home town of Philadelphia, bringing together some of the hottest hip hop, soul, rock and pop acts for an epic one-day event.

Trivia

Questlove, the band's percussionist, is one of the more outspoken members of the group. Keeping up to date with major headlines, the drummer makes a point to remain active on social media channels, often posting dozens of tweets and Instagram photos in a single day. In one interview with Mother Jones Magazine, the musician admits that tweeting, to him, is like embracing "a stream of consciousness." He also says that he does the majority of his tweeting while on set on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon."

Band/Singer

Since being formed in the late 80s by rapper Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson in Philadelphia, the Roots have come to be known as "Hip-hop's first legitimate band." Since their founding, they added several new members, including Malik B, Josh Abrams, and Leonard "Hub" Hubbard, in addition to a couple more musicians for their ongoing stint as the house band for Jimmy Fallon's late night show on NBC. Widely regarded for their jazz-centric, soulful, and multi-instrumental approach to creating hip-hop and R&B, the band has released an incredible ten formal studio albums and a slew of other collaborative and experimental EPs.

Breakthrough

The Roots' 1996 premiere of "Illadelph Halflife" found the group some success when it broke into the Top 40 Billboard 200 charts, but it wasn't until they released "Things Fall Apart" in 1999 that their popularity really took off. The album peaked at the Number 4 position on the Billboard charts and eventually earned itself platinum record status in sales. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2000, and though it didn't take home the prise for Best Rap Album, it did set the band up for a future of successful recordings and give them a win in the category of Best Rap Performance by a Group for the track "You Got Me" with Erykah Badu.

Hit Albums

After years of recording and releasing stellar albums, The Roots have received fourteen Grammy nominations, three of which they won. Critics differ on which album by the legendary band is their best, but many conclude that the honour goes to "Things Fall Apart," "Phrenology" or "How I Got Over."

Show Experience

The Roots are an exceptionally experienced performing band, and their live show is by all accounts spectacular and fun for the audience. Many have noted the group's tendency to joke around onstage, often teasing each other or telling silly anecdotes to the crowd.
