German experimentalist Edgar Froese formed this offbeat electro act in Berlin in 1967, shortly after a highly inspiring encounter with artist Salvador Dali at his villa in Cadaques. As an avid technophile, Froese began creating making his own instruments and collecting different diegetic sounds with a tape recorder to help with the production process. The band released their debut album Electronic Meditation in 1969 and the record is now known to be the earliest example of Krautrock, mixing post-psychedelic sounds with the moody atmosphere of progressive rock.

The group enjoyed their most influential period in the 1970s, when they produced seminal albums like Atem, which John Peel named his Album of the Year in 1973. The band were soon snapped up by Virgin Records before releasing the eerie album Phaedra, which hit Number 15 in the UK charts despite its avant-garde content. Their live performances have always been an extremely loud and all-encompassing event, with the inclusion of countless instruments and sequencers.
