Sparta Rotterdam was the first professional team to be established in the Netherlands. The team was founded in 1888 by students and started out as the Rotterdamsche Cricket & Football Club Sparta, before the branches were divided a few months later. Their first official football match was played two years later. Sparta Rotterdam now has many titles under its belt, having won the Dutch National Championship several times, as well as the KNVB national cup and the Zilveren Bal tournament. The club is considered one of the most traditional teams in existence, and many of its players went on to play for the Dutch National Football Team. Sparta Rotterdam was truly a pioneer in Dutch football, helping organise competitions and becoming the first member of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbalbond (KNVB), the Dutch Football Association. Other professional football clubs soon followed suit, with SBV Excelsior founded in 1902 and Feyenoord in 1908. Sparta Rotterdam was particularly successful in the first years of its creation, from 1893 to 1918, winning a string of titles that marked the period as their first "Golden Age". Their second "Golden Age" came in the mid-1950s, and it was during this period that they won their first KNVB cup and participated in their first European competition. Throughout its history, Sparta Rotterdam has had many ups and downs. The team played in the Eredivisie, the Dutch top division of professional football, until the early 2000s, when it was relegated to the second division, the Eereste Divisie.
