Seasick Steve: extraordinary life of an extraordinary musician

Born in Oakland, California in 1941, Steve Wold fell in love with the guitar as a young boy. In a long and varied apprenticeship before he found fame, Steve spent much of his teen years hopping between freight trains and busking for dinner money before working in a series of poorly paid jobs throughout the 70s. A self-confessed hobo, he worked in a carnival, as a cowboy, and as a migrant worker.

Always maintaining his interest in music, Steve eventually found himself in Tennessee – where he built a small recording studio – but, ever the vagabond, relocated to Seattle in the 1990s. Bands in the emerging grunge scene appreciated his authenticity and Steve soon found himself collaborating with the likes of Bikini Kill and Modest Mouse. In the 2000s, he ventured to the Norwegian capital of Oslo, and gained his infamous alias after a somewhat unfortunate incident aboard a booze cruise to Copenhagen.

After 40 years hanging around the business, his music was eventually picked up in the UK, with his star going supernova after an amazing appearance on Jools Holland's annual New Year's Eve Hootenanny in 2006. On the show, Seasick Steve played a live rendition of "Dog House Boogie" on his unique instruments: the now legendary "Three String Trance Wonder" (an old Japanese hollowbody guitar from the 60s with only three strings left) and the "Mississippi Drum Machine" (a small wooden box that's stomped on for percussion). 

The following summer Steve appeared on more UK festival bills than any other artist (including Leeds, Reading and Glastonbury); won a Mojo Award for Best Breakthrough Act; and landed the UK top 10. Seasick's major-label debut, I Started Out with Nothin and I Still Got Most of It Left (2208) was a massive, critically acclaimed success with sold out tours and memorable gigs at the Royal Albert Hall, Manchester's Apollo, Belfast's Grand Opera House and many more.
