SC Paderborn 07 is a second division Bundesliga team from northern Rhineland that has also had a brief spell in the top tier, albeit only lasting a year. It's a smallish club, with a home ground that holds about 15,000 and that makes it a great way to have an intimate experience of small-town German football. SC Paderborn 07 has only been in existence as an official club name since 1997. They were previously known as TuS Paderborn/Neuhaus to preserve the identities of the two clubs that had merged to form it, TuS Schloss Neuhaus and FC Paderborn. The team's home stadium is Benteler Arena, which, as previously mentioned, is a relatively small ground, allowing you to experience the action really close up should you find yourself in the town with SC Paderborn 07 tickets. Although the team has spent most of its time in the second division, it has often done pretty well in the German professional cup competition, DFB Pokal. Their best result in that tournament came in 2004 when they reached the last 16. On the way there, they scored an impressive win over a strong MSV Duisburg, and although they progressed no further, it was a huge boost for the football club. In the same year, they moved to their new grounds, having outgrown the Herman-Löns Stadion that had been their long-time home.
When it comes to league performance, the picture has been a little less rosy for SC Paderborn 07. They nearly weren't promoted to the professional leagues at all, when they won the amateur Oberliga Wesfallen but lost both their play-off matches against Fortuna Düsseldorf and Eintracht Braunschweig, respectively. They were saved by the formation of a new third-tier professional league, the Regionalliga West/Südwest. Things got better from there too, and they made the second division for the second time in 2005, spending roughly ten years there before finally making it all the way to the top division of the Bundesliga in 2015. From there, they plummeted, however, and a mere two years later, they were floundering in the third division once again. Astonishingly, they bounced back, got promoted to division two, which they nearly won, and in 2019 returned to 1. Bundesliga.
