Led by Mexican-born guitarist of the same name, Santana broke through the stratosphere into national consciousness with a landmark performance at Woodstock Festival in 1969. Their eponymous debut album peaked in the Top Five of the US charts and stayed there for an incredible two years powered by their incredible festival performance, in which they debuted Latin rock tracks 'Evil Ways' and 'Jingo'.

Astonishingly, their sophomore album Abraxas (1970) managed to top the success of the first album, reaching the top of the charts and selling over 4 million copies worldwide. The albums never-before-seen blend of Latin, blues, rock, jazz and salsa has seen it defined as one of the greatest LPs of all time. Indeed, in 2016 it was specially selected for preservation by the National Recording Registry, who deemed it 'culturally, historically and artistically significant'.

In 1998, the band were inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but continued to blaze a trail well into the millennium with more multi-million selling records. The release of their 1998 album Supernatural marked a whole new chapter for Santana, who started what has come to be known as the 'Latin explosion' era. After 15 years without a hit, single 'Smooth' won three Grammy Awards, was the final number one Hot Hit of the 1990s and the number two biggest selling Hot Hit of the 20^th Century after Chubby Checker's 'The Twist'.
