Romeo and Juliet is one of William Shakespeare's best known tragedies, telling the tale of two lovers kept apart by a long standing family feud. In the Prokofiev-scored ballet, Romeo and Juliet's romantic drama is translated with fluid choreography, while violent clashes between the Montagues and Capulets are performed with energetic verve. As a ballet, the story of dizzy-with-love Romeo and headstrong Juliet is just as affecting, using a beloved dance form to express the play's depth and emotion.
In the 1960s, choreographer Kenneth MacMillian revived the classic work at the Royal Opera House, infusing Romeo and Juliet the ballet with jubilation and woe told through dance. At its grand opening the performance was met with a stunning 43 curtain calls, the crowd refusing to leave until the safety curtain was brought down. Today, Romeo and Juliet is received with enthusiasm as well, thrilling both those familiar with and new to the ballet.
