Created by renowned electronic music producer Derek Vincent Smith, Pretty Lights swiftly took the world of electronica by storm from its emergence in 2004. Originally a collaboration with Smith's friend Michael Menert, who left after the release of the first album, Pretty Lights presents an enticing new spin on electronic club music.

Pretty Lights tour dates are found at venues across the nation, transporting fans into an alternate reality with a moody, psychedelic soundscape built on exquisite layering. Smith brings fans a lavish, visually intense show full of laser effects fitting of the music sensation's name.

Pretty Lights' background

Now a leader in the genre, Pretty Lights has its origins all the way back to the '90s, when Derek Vincent Smith and Michael Menert were friends who spent their afternoons skateboarding together since the eighth grade. One day, Smith brought his bass guitar along, and a musical partnership was born. As teenagers, they formed a band called The Freeze along with their friend Paul Brandt. This early incarnation enjoyed success within their community, and even placed second in a local battle of the bands competition.

However, it wasn't until 2004 that Smith and Menert came together to focus on the project that would become Pretty Lights. By 2006, the pair had released a debut album titled Taking Up Your Precious Time. Menert left the project shortly afterwards to pursue his own independent work. That didn't slow Smith down at all, and Filling Up the City Skies, a double album, hit shelves in 2008. During these years, Smith also engaged in extensive touring, appearing with then-bigger names The Disco Biscuits, Widespread Panic and Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9). A third album, Passing by Behind Your Eyes, emerged just one year later in 2009.

By 2010, Smith's focus was back on touring and developing his entrancing, effect-heavy live shows. He played numerous stops across North America, including appearances at festivals such as Coachella, Movement, Electric Zoo and Ultra. January 2011 saw the birth of his independent label, Pretty Lights Music, which released albums by Gramatik and his friend Michael Menert, among others.

Pretty Lights' recent work

In 2013, Smith released a new album, A Color Map of the Sun. It differed from his previous work in that he collaborated with others and developed his own "vintage" music rather than sampling pre-existing recordings. A Color Map of the Sun enjoyed significant success, reaching No. 24 on the Billboard 200 and rising to No 2. on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
