Deciding on a career in music at an early age, Lionel Richie formed a number of R&B groups before becoming the lead singer and saxophonist of funk band the Commodores in the late 60s. An instant hit, the group allowed the singer to demonstrate his song writing prowess, with tracks like "Three Times a Lady" captivating audiences.
During his time with the Commodores Richie started to pen songs for stars like Kenny Rogers, as well as experimenting with writing solo material. By the time his self-titled solo debut was released in 1982, he was already one of the most well-known frontmen in pop, before number one hits such as "Truly", "Dancing on the Ceiling" and "All Night Long" cemented his status as one of the world's best pop performers.
