Born and raised in the university town of St. Andrews, this Scottish vocalist was first hooked on music after hearing legends like David Bowie, and learned to sing by emulating the great Ella Fitzgerald. After gaining some experience performing in various indie bands, she decided to go it alone and signed with the British indie label Relentless Records. When debut album Eye To The Telescope was released in 2004, but failed to gain much exposure - at least at first.

When she was called in as a last minute replacement to perform on an episode of Later... With Jools Holland, it proved a remarkable turning point for her career. Armed with only a guitar, a tambourine and a loop pedal, she stole the show with her rendition of 'Black Horse and the Cherry Tree'. Eye To The Telescope surged in popularity, while the performed single became one of the biggest radio hits of the year.
