The creation of Zouk: a brand-new island genre

Kassav were formed in 1979 on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, a French region in the Lesser Antilles archipelago. Influenced by popular Haitian, Dominican and fellow Guadeloupean compas and kadans bands such as Exile One, Grammacks and Tabou Combo, founding members Pierre-Edouard Décimus and Jacob F. Desvarieux - a Paris studio musician - decided to develop Guadeloupean carnival style music in a more modern, polished way. They named their band Kassav': an Antillean Creole word for a local dish made using the cassava root. The genre became known as Zouk and, thanks to Kassav', it became incredibly popular during the 1980s. In fact, they were the first to use MIDI technology in this type of music and fuse it together with other styles like funk and makossa.
