Karine Polwart: Storied Folk Songs
Singer and songwriter Karine Polwart sings of the pain, losses and loves of her fellow Scotsmen. Polwart is not afraid to touch on subjects like depression and war, but most of her ballads have a chorus of hope to lift the crowd's spirits. Fans are deeply drawn to Polwart's view of the world as heard through her lyrical Scottish brogue, and consider her a Scottish music legend in the making.
Schedule
Karine Polwart tours extensively in the UK and can be seen at venues such as The Aberfeldy Festival in Aberfeldy Perthshire; Cutty Sark in London; Kulturhaus Ludenscheid in Ludenscheid, Germany; the Celtic Connections Show in Glasgow; Tradfest in Dublin and the Lochwinnoch Arts Festival in Lochwinnoch Renfrewshire.
Trivia
Before she became a singer, Polwart focused on university studies in the areas of philosophy and politics. She then went on to work for women's and children's rights. These courses in her life led to her songwriting and singing career delving into human issues, injustices and hope, and her desire to reach people with her songs. "For me" says Polwart, "music is one of the most powerful ways of making sense of the world. It's for celebrating, grieving, sharing, wondering. Nothing inspires me more than the realisation that any one of my songs means something to someone else".
Band/Singer
Music has always run through Karine Polwart's veins and she formed her own band, KP and the Minichips, at the age of ten. Prior to the launch of her solo career, Polwart was a member of Scottish bands, Malinky and Battlefield Band. She also collaborates with The Burns Unit and The Fruit Tree Foundation, a festival held to benefit the Mental Health Foundation. Polwart released her first solo album, Faultlines, in 2003 and it went on to win the Best Album award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2005.
Breakthrough
When Karine Polwart was voted "Best Scots Singer" at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2003, she was definitely on her way as a solo performer. Her work with earlier bands gave her a great foundation, but her ability to blend her passionate views on political and social issues has distinguished her as an important voice for her generation.
Hit Albums
Her debut album "Faultlines" won three awards, one of which was Best Album at the 2005 BBC Folk Awards, and this catapulted Polwart from local to national presence on the music scene. Her next album, "Scribbled in Chalk" was released in 2006 and showcased the song, "Daisy," which won the BBC Folk Award for Best Original Song in 2007. One of the original members of the Scottish/Canadian group, The Burns Unit, Polwart and the band released an album called "Side Show" in 2010 to wide acclaim. Since that time, Polwart has released a DVD entitled "Here's Where Tomorrow Starts" in 2011 and an album in 2012 entitled "Traces."
Show Experience
Karine Polwart "takes the heart to places few singers even know exist", stated Word magazine in 2008. Right in the middle of the Scottish folk renaissance, Polwart fits right in with other artists who can move between genres. Karine Polwart tickets are a treat for all the senses as she graces the stage accompanied by just a few backup musicians. Her low key, emotionally-charged style mesmerises audiences, and you may find yourself also transfixed by her lyrical voice and expressive face as she sings her folk ballads of love, loss and hope.
