The youngest of the siblings, Janet spent much of her youth being overshadowed by the success of her older brothers and their band The Jackson 5. She initially considered a career out of the limelight as a horse jockey or entertainment lawyer before recording in a studio. Throughout much of her formative years the young star forged a career in acting, taking up roles in numerous family sitcoms before releasing her eponymous debut album in 1982. The album enjoyed moderate success on R&B charts but it was her third effort, Control, which saw the star stumble on success thanks to its dance/hip-hop/R&B sound, resulting in a No.1 spot in the Billboard charts as well as five Top 5 singles. She also stormed the world of music videos, dominating MTV with her intense choreography (arranged by a then-unknown Paula Abdul). This, and her embracing of female empowerment, provided the basis for much of Jackson's success going forward.

She cemented her success with 1989's Rhythm Nation 1814, which gained platinum status six times and addressed more global issues in its lyrics, like crime, illiteracy and injustice. The record became the only one in music history to provide No. 1 hits in three different calendar years, and the only album to get seven Top 5 singles in the Hot 100. The title track also gave rise to one of the most iconic pop videos in history thanks to its warehouse setting and her famous military ensemble.
