The early history of Hannoverscher Fussball-Club 1896 was dominated by several mergers until 1913, when it settled as Hannover 96. The pre-WWII years saw the club win its first German title with a victory over FC Schalke 04 in 1938, which is still considered one of the biggest upsets in German football history. In 1945, after the war, the club was re-established and went on to register another title in 1954. It would spend a decade in the Bundesliga before being relegated in 1975. Despite this setback, 1992 provided something of a treat for H96 fans when the team registered a string of wins over first division Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen en route to the DFB-Pokal championship.
