Glenn Hughes: prolific writer and collaborator

Born in Cannock, Staffordshire, Hughes fronted Finders Keepers in the 1960s as bassist/vocalist, as well as the British funk rock band Trapeze, before being recruited to replace Roger Glover as bassist in Deep Purple in 1973. Though he considered himself more of a vocalist than a bassist, Hughes was persuaded to join the group after being told that the group were persuing Paul Rodgers and Hughes to be co-lead vocalists. 

The recruitment of Rodgers (who set up Bad Company) fell through, with David Coverdale instead being hired as Deep Purple's lead vocalist. As promised, Hughes shared lead vocal duties with Coverdale on the band's next three albums, until their break-up in 1976. Shortly after the demise of Deep Purple, Hughes embarked on a solo career and released his first solo album Play Me Out in 1977. Over the proceeding decade, Hughes worked on projects with the likes of Pat Thrall; Gary Moore; Black Sabbath and Phenomena, but didn't release another solo album until 1992's L.A. Blues Authority Volume II: Glenn Hughes – Blues. 

Since getting himself clean and sober in 1991, Hughes has released a further 12 solo albums, including the critically acclaimed Songs in the Key of Rock, Soul Mover and 2006's Music for the Divine which featured Red Hot Chili Peppers members Chad Smith and John Frusciante. He continues to tour as a part of Kings of Chaos, Black Country Communion and as a solo artist, with 2018 dates taking place across the UK.
