Starting out in '50s group The Pips with her brother, sister and cousins, this sensational singer quickly eclipsed the rest of her family. In 1959, the family band were renamed Gladys Knight and The Pips (wonder how her poor relatives felt about that?), and went on to achieve a string of decade-defining hits throughout the '60s including 'Help Me Make It Through the Night' and 'The Way We Were'.

In 1966, the group joined Motown Records and earned their first Grammy Award off the back of shimmering soul pop single 'Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)'. Touring as the opening act for Diana Ross and the Supremes helped their singer gain a whole new legion of fans, and in 1973, she released the solo single that would become her magnum opus, 'Midnight Train to Georgia'. The song is included in the Grammy Hall of Fame and counted as one of Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
