FC Groningen spent much of the 20th century being called GVAV. Founded as Unitas in 1915, it became known as GVAV after just two years and rapidly shot to fame as the northern Netherlands' best football team, overcoming Groningen's other home teams, Velocitas and Be Quick. From 1951, when the Dutch premier division was created, FC Groningen played at the very top: the Eredivisie. A name-change in 1971 was necessitated by financial problems, but the club's auspicious new start was marred by a fatal accident involving star goalkeeper Tonny van Leeuwen. It took a few years for the club to bounce back but since the '80s, FC Groningen has been a force to be reckoned with in European football, as well as a training ground for both national and international football talent. Perhaps because it has always been larger than most teams in the region, FC Groningen didn't historically have many local rivals. AFC Ajax and FC Twente are considered to be major rivals by the club's supporters, though the teams don't regularly meet each other in any traditional derby games. This honour goes to SC Heerenveen, who meet FC Groningen in an annual match referred to as The Derby of the North. The first FC Groningen stadium, Oosterpark, was left in 2005 for the more modern Euroborg stadium, which at just over 22,000 seats was nearly twice the size of the original.
