Echo and the Bunnymen Biography - Dark Rock Overlords
Led by supremely confident frontman Ian McCulloch, this influential group formed in Liverpool in 1978, taking part of their name from a drum machine named Echo. They soon replaced the trademark apparatus with real life drummer Pete De Freitas and soared into the UK charts with their debut album Crocodiles in 1980. Crammed full of expertly written songs, grandiose wailing and droning bagpipes, their darker first album Heaven Up There garnered an even bigger audience paving the way for their defining opus Porcupine, which hit Number 2 in the UK charts in 1983.
