Clouseau is a very successful pop-rock band from Belgium that has enjoyed one of the longest careers on the European pop scene, having first hit the stage and the minor reaches of the Belgian charts in 1983. They play a mellow brand of piano- and guitar-driven adult-oriented pop, although their live shows include their earlier catalogue that meshed synth and electric guitar in the trademark 80s pop sound. Breaking into the Belgian charts

Clouseau is probably best known outside the Benelux region for their hit "Close Encounters", which was released on their first English-language album of the same name in an attempt to break through into the international pop scene in 1991. It's typical late-80s/early-90s synth pop with a touch of rock, much like the music of Roxette – something that was recognised by European promoters when the band won the support slot on Roxette's tour of the continent, when the Scandinavian outfit was riding high on the charts in every country from Australia to Iceland. As was standard practice back then, the top pop bands in a country almost always entered the Eurovision Song Contest, and Clouseau attempted to follow suit in 1989, only managing to come in second in the try-outs. However, nothing could stop the song that they performed, "Annie", from rocketing into the Belgian charts, taking the band along with it to virtually overnight national fame. An unbroken run of hit pop singles

From then on Clouseau simply didn't take a break. Right up to the present day the band has continued to release albums and singles, almost all of them charting with comfortable familiarity. They began a new band institution in 2002, when they played their first Christmas concert at Antwerps Sportpaleis, which has since become an annual tradition. In later years the synth and guitar pop hits have been replaced by more adult-oriented ballads, which proved just as popular. Their sound has evolved along roughly the lines of New Zealand pop colossus Neil Finn's sorely missed "Crowded House", which the band has incidentally covered along the way. "Vliegtuig" was the most exemplary of these, reaching the Top 5 in the Belgian charts in 2013. They also managed to crack the Dutch charts with "Ik zie de hemel" in 2005.
