Opened in 1912, Bristol Hippodrome was designed by renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham and included two notable features: an enormous water tank at the front of the stage, which could be filled with 100,000 gallons for use in circus or aquatics shows, and a large dome above the stalls that could be opened to allow natural air-conditioning. While the tank is long gone and an air-conditioning system has since been installed, the dome still exists and is perhaps the only such structure in the UK to remain fully operational.
