Blue Oyster Cult - Seminal '70s Hard Rockers
Bursting onto the music scene in the late 1960s when 'hippie music' from The Beatles and their contemporaries was the order of the day, Blue Oyster Cult are celebrated for bringing metal to the masses. While they achieved minimal success in the decade of peace and love, the hair-raising outfit are famous for creating some of the more accessible metal music of the 1970s - once they'd struck up friendships with important pop culture figures such as Patti Smith and Stephen King.
Their creepy Byrds-inspired signature hit '(Don't Fear) the Reaper' - which is driven, quite strangely, by a cowbell - has been spooking audiences for over 40 years since its release in 1976. One of the highlights of their third album Agents of Fortune, the track is included in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The chilling track is also famous for featuring in John Carpenter's classic horror movie Halloween (1978), the pioneering film of the slasher subgenre. It plays in the car as Jamie Lee Curtis' character is stalked by a masked nutcase.
