Bellowhead Biography - Amazing, Award Winning Live Act

Touring musician Jon Boden and his melodeon playing friend John Spiers were in a traffic jam one day in 2004 after playing a gig when they decided to form a band of their own. The longer the pair sat in the gridlock, the more musically-minded friends they thought to invite to join them. By the time they hit the highway, they had formed the initial eleven-piece line-up. Between them, the members played over 20 different instruments, from the fiddle, bagpipes, guitar and trombone to more obscure instruments including the slide whistle, Anglo concertina, claviola and sousaphone.

Before they even had the chance to rehearse, the band were invited to perform at Oxford Town Hall, where they started to gather what would become a fervent fan base. Their groundbreaking blend of strings and brass was 'virtually unprecedented in traditional English folk music' - tracks like 'New York Girls' and '10,000 Miles Away' pushed their Hedonism album through the stratosphere, and it became the highest selling independent folk album in history.

BBC Radio 2, Britain's leading folk radio station, has presented Bellowhead with eight awards over the course of their decade career, including many for Best Live Act and Best Group. In 2016, Jon Boden decided to step down as frontman, prompting the group to disband amicably.
