Known as “Los Leones” – the Lions – Athletic Bilbao FC has won an astonishing number of trophies in top flight Spanish football. They also have another quite remarkable achievement under their belt, having never been relegated from the Spanish top division, La Liga, since their founding in 1898 through till the 21st century. In the process, they won it eight times in the following 100 years. They also won the Copa Del Rey no fewer than 23 times in the 20th century, including the inaugural one in 1902, a feat only outdone by one of their two main Spanish rivals, FC Barcelona. They won a hat-trick of these championships from 1914 to 1916. It was in these games that one of their most legendary players, Rafael Aranzadi (affectionately known as Pichichi), scored a hat-trick. The two teams that rival Bilbao as the best in Spanish history are the predictable suspects, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF, who both share the club’s non-relegation record.
