Despite having to overcome serious health issues as a teenager, Newkirk started a career as a dancer for hire before eventually getting work as a backing vocalist. While she didn't grow up with dreams of being a singer, she soon found producers intrigued by the character and intensity of her unique voice. After years of toiling, she found label attention through her incendiary performances on the MTV talent show The Cut, where she reached the finals. The songbird signed her first record deal shortly before turning 30, a relatively late time to break into the music industry, but quickly made up for lost time. The 'Sick and Tired' vocalist released her 2000 debut Not That Kind and sophomore album Freak of Nature followed in quick succession to massive commercial success.
Over the next decade, she brought out three further records, with her eponymous third LP hitting the number one spot in both the UK and Australia before Heavy Rotation and It's a Man's World helped to seal her status as one of the biggest names in pop over the 2000s. In 2014, Newkirk released her latest album Resurrection, which had a cathartic effect on her, having had to cancel her 2013 tour due to her second battle with cancer. Her relatable lyrics of heartbreak and empowerment have given the singer a devoted following of fans.
